Back home

We have been back in Dawson for exactly a week and have been re-instituted to the Museum Board, I have already been to a meeting of the Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee, and been asked to go back to work early.  We have moved into our new apartment and are currently getting used to life back in the north ... there's still a lot of snow here.  We narrowly missed missing two complete winters.

It's strange moving in to a new place.  We have been unpacking and I've had moments of panic when  I think "why are moving in when we're going to be moving on so quickly?".  But we aren't moving on...we're home.  It's hard to get used to the idea that we are not going to be moving for awhile.  Though it's nice to play with all of my pots and pans (and bowls!), I seem to have forgotten how to make anything but pad thai and stir fry, which admittedly are good things to eat (and we transported enough ingredients up here to last us about 3 years), but we just made those two dishes for just about everyone that we visited on our way up north, so I've been going through my recipe books, trying to find new things to make.

Unpacking was a real education on "what you don't really need".  We gave away BOXES of clothes.  After living for almost 2 years with 2 skirts, 3 shirts and 3 pairs of underwear, it's given me some perspective on what I need.  It's nice to have a bit of choice, but do I really need 30 pairs of underwear?  Especially now that I don't have to wash them by hand in the sink?  Nathan and I made a pact that, since we're moving into a smaller (one-bedroom) apartment, "if it doesn't fit, it has to go!".  A lot of stuff went.  Boxes and boxes.  Though not my bowls.  NEVER my bowls.

But now we are free to put up our treasures from overseas:  a yellow and green and pink dragon made of rope from Thailand; a brown saree from India to cover the shelves; colourful lanterns from Vietnam in the corner;  a green and brown batik print from Indonesia on the couch.  We now have about 10 pairs of new chopsticks to use, and when the moment presents itself, I'll wear my outfit that I had made in Vietnam.

I'm a bit sad to be back and nesting again, but at the same time, I'm really happy to be back and nesting again.  I must admit to a few teary moments when the plane touched down in Whitehorse.  It was really ending.  But we have been welcomed back with warmth and open arms, Nathan already has big plans to open a first-run movie theatre at the museum, and I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things at work...though not so much that I want to go back EARLY!

We will probably have more blogging in the future from this site...though they won't be travel stories so much.  If you want off the list, let me know.

Thanks to everyone who has been in touch over the last year and a half.  It's been great sharing our travels with you.
