International hair

I stopped having complicated hair after high school.  Long hair was good enough, if it wasn't clean, I could put it up.  I don't own a hair dryer, a curling iron, mousse, or gel.I've had the same bottle of hairspray for about 3 years.  (Though I may have finally thrown that one out when we packed up our stuff and put it in storage)  I certainly don't travel with any of those things.  The most complicated thing I own is a barrette.  Usually Nathan cuts my hair, straight across the bottom.  This is fine, and if he makes a mistake, it'll grow back eventually, right?

The first time I had my hair cut outside of Canada was in Turkey, quite a few years ago.  They made me look like Jennifer Aniston.  I cried.  (I used to care more) It's hard when you can't tell them what you want, because they speak a different language.  And have you ever noticed, hairdressers often don't care what you say.  They nod their heads and then go right ahead and do whatever they want.

So now here we are in Thailand, there is long hair everywhere (long, straight, black hair) and you'd think that they would understand "light layers in the back, long layers in front" and "I DON'T want to look like Jennifer Anniston" and "A LITTLE BIT of layers".

He nodded at me "yes, yes" and said "your hair very dry, madam" and "I make your hair very beautiful" and then proceeded to cut my hair just like Jennifer Anniston, blow dried it within an inch of its life (why would you do this if my hair is already dry?) and at that point, what could I do?  Nod and smile. It'll grow back eventually, right?

I've had my hair cut in several other places across the world, and somehow, my hair always ends up like Jennifer Anniston's.  Each time there have been fewer tears.  International hair dressers can't all be wrong, right?  Maybe this is my best cut.  To be fair, it's good to have most of the dry stuff off.  And although Nathan has compared me to both a Valley Girl and the blond band member in the Muppets since my haircut (he's just not used to seeing me with my hair down), it's nice to wear my hair down without looking like a mop.  He USED to call me "shaggy" when my hair was down.  I'm not sure which is better.

We'll see what happens when I wash it and go to bed with a wet head (which is what I usually do). There is a bit of a wave to my hair that comes out when I sleep with a wet head.   Might be back to being a mop.

I can hear both my (Chinese) mom and my (Chinese) grandmother screeching, "Noooooo! Do not go to bed with your hair wet! It's so unhealthy! You will get headaches when you're old!!!"

:)

Lots of people would KILL to have Jennifer Aniston's hair. If it's still long enough to put up, roll with it, baby!
