Matt,
Thanks for your considered response.
It is true that no system is perfect. Everyone is constantly experimenting to figure it (whatever 'it' is) out.
We're mostly still here, so we must be getting some things right. I think I could argue fairly persuasively that 'beingness' is the best and perhaps only true measure of our success. And since being is only a thing of a given moment, we are all successful earthlings at every moment until we die.
This is not to say you cannot perhaps be successful after death, but it seems likely that at very least you won't be an earthling--which is a particular and (i say) very special type of being. But then I'm obviously biased by my love for Earth (it's a sort of internationalism).

I agree that it is the theoretical trappings of wealth, such as a desire for Control and power, that is at the root of this problem. Suicide bombers are using material wealth inequality as an excuse to dictate their opinions to the world and get people's attention.
In my opinion, both sides have been guilty of displays of power to further their agendas. The military crackdown in Egypt is a good example of this; the Muslim Brotherhood corrupt and prejudice (againts women specifically) however an imperfect system of democracy is needed to battle corruption and discrimination. Short term gain, long term pain,
Matt
