Academy Awards

This has nothing to do with travel (though movies do offer a sort of travel of the mind). However, we are trying to catch up with our movie watching--especially as our big screen experience will likely be very rare once we are back in Dawson City. Based on my Internet research, this is my guess on the upcoming nominations for "Best Picture". Note: we haven't seen all of these films; these are Mr. Movie Picker "algorithmical" guesses.

The US Academy Awards (Oscars) are to be presented on March 7, 2010. The nominations for those awards are happening on February 2, 2010.

This year promises to be rather unique in that the Academy will nominate 10 films for "Best Picture". With that many slots to fill, film buffs are hopeful that some genre films (in particular those in sci-fi, action, and comedy) will slip through and get a nod.

Based on critical and audience reviews, here are Mr. Movie Picker's best guesses for Best Picture nominees:

1.) Up in the Air (R) - Despite all the available slots, this one seems like one of the few sure bets. Strong performances from a likable cast characterize the kind of "little" film the academy likes to lift up.

2.) Avatar (PG-13) - Love it or hate it, this mega-blockbuster ought to get a nod based on money made alone; of course, the story is also rather better than this year's other 10-Ton Monkey.

3.) I Love You Phillip Morris (R) - If you haven't heard of this one, that is what the producers of this film would say the academy awards are for. Look for this one to pull an acting nom (or two) as well.

4.) Crazy Heart (R) - This little one would also get a boost from nomination.

5.) Invictus (PG-13) - Audiences and critics are actually rather underwhelmed by Clint Eastwood's latest effort. Nevertheless, it will not be a great shock to see it gain multiple nominations.

6.) Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (R) - A truly small film with powerful performances. This film is in that weird limbo place of being a long-shot to win the top price but a sure bet to be nominated for it.

7.) District 9 (R) - A truly deserved nomination should go to this sci-fi film which may also be a dark horse to grab top honours.

8.) The Hurt Locker (R) - Thrillers are rarely more harrowing; being one of the most acclaimed films of 2009 doesn't hurt either.

9.) Whip It (PG-13) - This uplifting film is totally worthy, but probably too much fun for a nod. I include it because, in a year when so many of us had precious little to laugh about, some effective comedy should be praised.

10.) Star Trek (PG-13) - Yeah, that's right! The fantastic prequel to one of the most enduring film franchises in history should be up there. If Casino Royale (PG-13 - 2006) came out this year, it would be as well for the same reasons.

Alternates and dark horses (this is assuming that wonderful animations, like Up (G), Fantastic Mr. Fox (PG), and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (PG) do not somehow slip into the best picture category):
