Modes of Transportation

There are many ways to get around in Delhi. These are not limited to taxi, train, rickshaw (above), bus, camel, donkey, Brahma bull, and, of course, elephant (below).
And you thought I was kidding about being stepped on.

But India also makes use of what may be the most unusual transport device in the world: the autorickshaw.
The autorickshaw is a haywire amusement-park ride gone off the rails. It nimbly careens around in traffic, slipping by massive buses and SUVs and occasionally coming to bone-jarring stops to avoid maiming the odd pedestrian. The only thing I cannot understand is why an autorickshaw chase does not feature in every James Bond film.
You see the massive thing in the background? That’s a bus.

Autorickshaws are used to move people, various types of materials, and even animals. (I saw one packed with chickens.) They can take between one and nine passengers. Well, they can probably take more passengers than that but I have yet to see.
Now, supposedly, there are only 53,000 autorickshaws in Delhi. And I think we saw all of them at least four times every day we were there. By-the-way, these pictures were taken at speed.
One major benefit of the autorickshaw is that the newer ones use bio-diesel, which is intended to make them more environmentally friendly. And Delhi needs all the help it can get in that department.
Coincidentally, this is the elephant Anne almost walked into.
